Hunting -- Semi-Guided Hunts

Semi-Guided Elk Hunts

We offer semi-guided hunts for the archery and muzzleloader seasons only. In our semi-guided camps, we have an experienced wrangler who will take you to and from the area you hunt daily via horseback. There you will hunt on your own. Our semi-guided camps have been designed for two to six hunters.

Hunting Areas

Our camps are located in the San Juan and Sangre De Cristo mountains in southern Colorado on the Rio Grande National Forest. We conduct our hunts in any of the following game management units - 76, 79, 80 and 82. (Our Quality Elk Area 76 camps are located in the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Elk licenses for this area are by drawing only.) The areas we hunt have patches of aspens, evergreens, open parks, drainages and basins that provide excellent big game hunting. Camps range in elevation from 8,000 to 12,000 feet and are located from three to fifteen miles via horseback from the trailhead.

Camps

We normally have camp completely set and ready for you when you arrive from your ride in. Canvas tents are used for lodging. Each sleeping tent can accommodate up to four hunters. The cook and guides will be housed in separate tents. Wood burning stoves are used for heat and Coleman lanterns for light. Cooking and dining will be done in a large mess tent. We take pride in our reputation for providing high quality, well prepared meals in all of our outfitted camps.

Game Care

Once you have killed your game, it will be your responsibilty to see that it is field dressed, skinned, caped and quartered. We will pack your game from the nearest horse trail to camp and then to town for cooling and/or processing. (Cooling and processing will be at the hunter's expense.)

Staff

We have an experienced staff familiar with the area. For semi-guided hunts, we have one wrangler for every three hunters and a competent camp cook.

Weather

Weather in the high country varies greatly from year to year and can change radically in hours. Daytime temperatures and conditions can rage from 70 degrees with fall sunshine to well below freezing. Nighttime temperatures can sometimes dip will below zero degrees. (You should expect and be prepared for warm sunshine, sub zero temperatures, high winds, rain, freezing rain, sleet, hail and deep snow.)

Transportation

If necessary, we will provide transportation to and from the Alamosa Airport. Horses and mules are used during the hunt. Each hunter will be provided with a saddle horse or mule fully equipped with all tack needed for the duration of the trip. Each hunter can expect to ride from one to ten miles per day.
