Guided Elk HuntsHunting AreasOur camps are located in the San Juan and Sangre De Cristo mountains in southern Colorado on the Rio Grande National Forest. We conduct our hunts in any of the following game management units - 76, 79, 80 and 82. (Our Quality Elk Area 76 camps are located in the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Elk licenses for this area are by drawing only.) The areas we hunt have patches of aspens, evergreens, open parks, drainages and basins that provide excellent big game hunting. Camps range in elevation from 8,000 to 12,000 feet and are located from three to fifteen miles via horseback from the trailhead. CampsWe can accommodate up to six hunters in each of our base camps. Canvas tents are used for lodging. Each sleeping tent can accommodate up to four hunters. The cook and guides will be housed in separate tents. Wood burning stoves are used for heat and Coleman lanterns for light. Cooking and dining will be done in a large mess test. Camp facilities will normally be set prior to arrival. It may be necessary to use spike camps to follow game movement. Spike camps will have one sleeping/cook tent. The guide will do the cooking. Each hunter will be expected to help with the chores. One guide will accompany two hunters. For all guided hunts, we will provide a camp cook, packer/wrangler and one guide per every two hunters. Game CareOnce you have killed your game, it will be field dressed, skinned, caped and quartered. Your game will be taken to the nearest town for cooling and/or processing. (Cooling and processing will be at the hunter's expense.) WeatherWeather in the high country varies greatly from year to year and can change radically in hours. Daytime temperatures and conditions can range from 70 degrees with fall sunshine to well below freezing. Nighttime temperatures can sometimes dip well below zero degrees. (You should expect and be prepared for warm sunshine, sub zero temperatures, high winds, rain, freezing rain, sleet, hail and deep snow.) TransportationIf necessary, we will provide transportation to and from the Alamosa Airport. Horses and mules are used during the hunt. Each hunter will be provided with a saddle horse or mule fully equipped with all tack needed for the duration of the trip. Each hunter can expect to ride from one to ten miles per day.
