Hunting -- Drop Camps

Drop Camps

Hunting Areas

Our camps are located in the San Juan and Sangre De Cristo mountains in southern Colorado on the Rio Grande National Forest. We conduct our hunts in any of the following game management units - 76, 79, 80 and 82. (Our Quality Elk Area 76 camps are located in the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Elk licenses for this area are by drawing only.) The areas we hunt have patches of aspens, evergreens, open parks, drainages and basins that provide excellent big game hunting. Camps range in elevation from 8,000 to 12,000 feet and are located from three to fifteen miles via horseback from the trailhead.

Items Provided by the Outfitter

The following items will be provided and packed to your drop camp location before your arrival: Tent, wood burning stove, Coleman cook stove, Coleman lanterns, Coleman fuel, camp ax, camp bow saw, camp shovel, water bucket, dish pans, cooking pans, dishes and utensils. There will not be any guide services provided for the drop camp hunters. (Groceries, game bags and first aid kits are not provided in the drop camps.)

Game Care

We will normally check on your welfare and success every other day. The hunter will be responsible for all game care; field dressing, skinning and quartering their own game. We will pack your game from your drop camp location to the trail head and then to the nearest town for cooling and/or processing. (Cooling and processing will be at the hunter's expense.)

Weather

Weather in the high country varies greatly from year to year and can change radically in hours. Daytime temperatures and conditions can range from 70 degrees with fall sunshine to well below freezing. Nighttime temperatures can sometimes dip well below zero degrees. (You should expect and be prepared for warm sunshine, sub zero temperatures, high winds, rain, freezing rain, sleet, hail and deep snow.)

Transportation

If necessary, we will provide transportation to and from the Alamosa Airport. Horses and mules are used during the hunt. Hunters will be provided with a saddle horse or mule fully equipped with all tack needed for the trip into and out of their drop camp. Due to insurance expenses, no horses will be left with drop camp hunters.
